Collector’s Editions Thoughts

By Paul

So I came across this today: and it got me thinking about various limited editions that are coming out.

Now I admit that I bought the Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood limited edition but now all I have is the game and a Jack-in-the-Box I have no use for.  I don’t want to come off as overly-critical of this and other games as I know the collector’s market is huge, but I have to wonder if every company releasing a “collector’s edition” is actually trying to cater to hardcore collectors. More than likely though they are counting on us seeing a 12″ statue and soundtrack or a cloth map and some free DLC and plopping down upwards of $150. I know in my last blog I wrote how I did like the Skyrim Collector’s Edition; although I can’t see myself personally buying it, I liked it because I don’t think they did anything like that for Oblivion and I believe this is the first time they’ve done an edition like that (I could be wrong and if any of you know, feel free to correct me.) What do all of you think of these different editions of games?

  1. I think this is a good “general” collector’s edition for the Elder Scroll series. G4TV I believe was asking if the price was too high and when you break down for each piece the price is set pretty well. Game with “Making of” about $70, Artbook for about $30, Map for maybe $10, and Statue for $40 is pretty fair in my book. Especially since the statue on would probably run you closer to $60 if they did it on its own.

My thought is this, why is there always an artbook thrown into a collector’s edition? Or that game + artbook = collector’s edition? Granted there are always going to be those games where you must have every single item of memorbilia you can get your hands on. For most of us though that poor parchment will just sit on the shelves and collect dust, if we don’t loose it first. The statue is by far my favorite piece of the whole thing. What Elder Scrolls fan wouldn’t want that in their home, not to mention its just plain snazzy looking!?
